In Uganda, women’s representation in politics and leadership has undergone an evolving journey characterized by resilience, advocacy, and determination. Here, we delve into the lives, achievements, and challenges faced by these representatives, highlighting their efforts to overcome barriers in a predominantly male political arena.

From Members of Parliament to local council leaders, these women are at the forefront of addressing critical issues impacting their communities, including health, education, human rights, and economic empowerment.

West Nile

Jesca Ababiku, women’s representative Adjumani District (NRM)

Jesca Ababiku is a Ugandan educator and politician. She is currently a member of the eleventh Parliament of Uganda as a women’s representative. She is the Chairperson of the Presidential Affairs (NRM). In the 2021 Uganda general elections, Ababiku retained her seat democratically for the third time as woman member of parliament for Adjumani district since 2011.

Lillian Obiale Paparu,  women’s representative Arua District (NRM)

Lillian Obiale Paparu is a Ugandan politician serving as a Member of Parliament in Uganda, representing the Arua District. In the NRM primary elections, she campaigned against Diana Ayikoru and Immaculate Bako, and then ran unopposed in the general election.

Joanne Aniku Okia, Women’s Representative Madi-Okollo District

Joanne Aniku Okia is the first woman member of parliament for Madi Okollo District and won the parliamentary seat unopposed in the 2021 Ugandan general election.

Okia contributed to the resolution of a long-standing border conflict between Madi Okollo District and Terego District standing out as Ugandan politician.

Ruth Molly Lematia Maracha, East Maracha District (NRM)

Ruth Molly Lematia Ondoru is a Ugandan politician, lawyer and human rights activist. She is also the Presidential Advisor on Family Affairs. Lematia has also legislated laws and policies in Uganda, and has been involved in international and regional policy, on peace and economic development in her career.

Jennifer Driwaru, Women’s Representative Maracha District (NRM)

Jennifer Driwaru is a Ugandan politician and businesswoman, a women’s representative for Maracha District in the 11th Ugandan Parliament. Driwaru bought two ambulances for Maracha district from the money that was said to been given to her to buy a car.

Judith Peace Achan, Women’s Representative Nwoya District (NRM)

She was elected in office as a woman Member to represent Nwoya district during the 2021 Uganda general elections.

In the eleventh parliament, she serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and currently serving on the Committee of Climate Change.

Huda Abason Oleru,   Aringa East (NRM)   Yumbe District

She was the Women Member of Parliament Representative for Yumbe District in the Eighth and Ninth parliament of Uganda. She was Independent but she is now affiliated to National Resistance Movement political Party. She was also the Minister of State for Veteran Affairs.

Naima Melsa Gule Avako, Women’s Representative (NRM) Yumbe District

She was elected in office as a female representative in parliament for Yumbe district during the 2021 Uganda general elections

Esther Afoyochan Women’s Representative Zombo District (NRM)

She was elected to office as a woman representative in parliament during the 2021 Uganda general elections. She also serves as a backbench commissioner representing the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the 11th Parliament of Uganda
