New Year Resolutions: A guide to achieving goals with purpose and balance

In Uganda, the dawn of a new year brings with it the hope for change, growth, and success. It is a time when many women, from the bustling streets of Kampala to the serene countryside of Jinja, reflect on the years gone by and dream of a better future. For many women, balancing home, work, family, and personal aspirations is no easy feat, yet the desire to improve oneself remains a central part of the New Year’s spirit.

Setting realistic resolutions

Every year, many Ugandan women set ambitious resolutions; to lose weight, get a promotion, start a business, or build a house. However, by the time February rolls around, many have already fallen off track. The key to staying committed is not setting lofty goals but creating resolutions that are grounded in reality.

Take Amina Mukisa, for instance. She is a small-scale farmer from a village outside of Kampala. Last year, Amina resolved to expand her farm and increase her income by 50 percent. But by mid-year, the heavy rains washed away her crops, and her resolution remained unfulfilled. Reflecting on the experience, Amina learned an important lesson; her goal was too broad and didn’t take into account the unpredictability of weather or other external factors.

To set more realistic resolutions, Amina decided to break her larger goal into smaller, actionable steps. Instead of focusing on a 50 percent increase in her farm’s revenue, she aimed to improve soil quality and increase the number of crops she planted. This goal was more attainable because it accounted for both her resources and the challenges she faced.

The lesson here is that setting specific, measurable, and attainable goals is crucial. Rather than aiming for large, vague goals that feel out of reach, break them down into smaller steps that can be accomplished one at a time.

Aligning resolutions with personal values

For many women, family, community, and faith play a central role in their lives. New Year resolutions must reflect these values, creating a sense of purpose and connection. Sarah Wambede, a teacher in the heart of Mbale, found herself overwhelmed by goals that didn’t align with her values. Last year, she resolved to work longer hours at the school, thinking that more time at work would lead to professional growth. However, this took a toll on her family life, leaving her little time for her children and husband.

This year, Sarah decided to adjust her resolution. She committed to balancing her work with her family responsibilities by setting specific boundaries for her workday. By finishing work at a set time, she could be present with her family and still pursue professional growth, such as attending evening professional development classes instead of staying at school late.

Aligning resolutions with personal values ensures that they are meaningful and sustainable. It’s not just about achieving success in one area of life; it’s about creating harmony and fulfillment across all aspects of life.

The power of small, consistent efforts

Many women live busy lives and time can feel like an enemy. But success often comes not from making drastic changes, but from making small, consistent efforts over time. Agnes Okiriya, a tailor in Gulu, had long dreamed of expanding her business and becoming a recognized name in the fashion industry. She had the skills, but the challenge was finding the time to grow her business while maintaining her daily routine.

Last year, Agnes resolved to expand her business by increasing her customer base. However, at times, she struggled to meet her expectations, often working late into the night, feeling tired and unproductive. This year, Agnes decided to take a different approach. Instead of overwhelming herself with a massive goal, she focused on one thing; marketing her services to five new clients each month. She created a schedule to balance her tailoring work with her marketing efforts. Every evening after work, Agnes dedicated just one hour to reaching out to potential clients, whether through word-of-mouth or social media.

By making small, daily commitments, Agnes found that her business gradually expanded, and her efforts led to long-term success.

The lesson here is that consistent progress, even in small increments, can lead to meaningful results. Women, often balancing multiple responsibilities, can benefit from focusing on making steady progress rather than aiming for perfection.

Tracking progress and staying accountable

One of the biggest challenges women face when pursuing resolutions is staying accountable. Without a system for tracking progress, it’s easy to lose sight of the goal or get discouraged by setbacks. Having a clear way to monitor achievements can make a huge difference.

For this reason, Jane Mushabe, a mother of three living in Mbarara, found it helpful to keep a journal for her resolutions. Last year, she resolved to improve her health by exercising more, but without tracking her progress, she fell off track. This year, Jane decided to keep a daily log of her meals and exercise routines. She also joined a support group of other women who shared similar fitness goals.

By being accountable to herself and her group, Jane found motivation even on days when she didn’t feel like exercising. She was able to celebrate small wins along the way, such as feeling more energetic and losing a few kilograms.

Tracking progress through journaling, apps, or support groups can provide a sense of achievement and keep you motivated throughout the year.

Adapting to change and overcoming setbacks

Finally, it’s important to remember that setbacks are inevitable. Life is unpredictable, and things don’t always go according to plan. The key is to be flexible and adapt when necessary. For instance, if a goal becomes unachievable due to unforeseen circumstances, whether it’s a family emergency or an economic setback, it’s okay to adjust the goal rather than abandon it altogether.

In the end, what matters most is the resilience to keep going, learning from each experience, and continuing to work towards the life you envision.

As Ugandan women, setting realistic goals, staying true to our values, making consistent efforts, and adapting to life’s changes are the foundations for success. The New Year is a fresh start, an opportunity to take charge of your destiny. By setting practical and achievable resolutions, and committing to them with patience and perseverance, every woman can turn her dreams into reality.

Happy New Year, and may this year be one of growth, progress, and fulfilment!
