Taking care of your plaited hair

A woman’s hair is her crown the reason for taking good care of it is paramount. For many, taking good care of their hair involves plaiting it for long periods of time. Taking care of plaited hair is essential to maintain its cleanliness, freshness and overall health. Maureen Mukisa, a hairstylist offers some tips:

Regular washing: Clean your plaited hair regularly using a gentle sulfate-free shampoo. How often you wash depends on your hair type and lifestyle, but generally, washing every 1-2 weeks is a good starting point. Dilute the shampoo with water to ensure it reaches the scalp without disturbing the plaits too much.

Scalp care: Pay special attention to your scalp. Use the pads of your fingers to gently massage the scalp while washing to remove dirt and oil. If possible, use a nozzle attachment on your showerhead to target the scalp without disrupting the plaits.

Always dry thoroughly: After washing, make sure your hair is completely dry to prevent mildew and unpleasant odours. You can air-dry or use a hooded dryer on a low setting. If time is a constraint, consider sitting under a hooded dryer on a low setting or using a handheld dryer with a diffuser.

Protective styling at night

Wrap your hair in a satin or silk scarf or use a satin/silk pillowcase to minimize friction and reduce breakage while you sleep. Alternatively, you can use a satin or silk bonnet to protect your plaited hair.

While it’s important to moisturize your hair, avoid excessive use of heavy products as they can lead to product buildup. Choose lightweight oils or leave-in conditioners to keep your hair moisturized without causing buildup.

Refreshing with dry Shampoo:In between washes, use a dry shampoo specifically designed for braids or plaits to absorb excess oil and refresh your hair and scalp. Apply the dry shampoo sparingly to the roots and massage it in gently.

Avoid excessive manipulation: Minimize the manipulation of your plaits. Excessive touching and pulling can lead to frizz and damage. Be gentle when styling or redoing any loose sections and avoid tight hairstyles that can cause tension on the scalp.

Maintain a healthy scalp: Keep your scalp healthy by applying a light, natural oil like jojoba or coconut oil to nourish the scalp and prevent dryness. If you have any itching or discomfort, consider using a diluted apple cider vinegar solution as a scalp rinse.

Always give your hair breaks between protective styles. Avoid keeping the same style for too long to prevent stress on the hair shafts and promote overall hair health.

Remember, individual hair types and preferences may vary, so it’s essential to tailor these tips to your specific needs. Additionally, consulting with a hairstylist who specializes in braided or plaited styles can provide personalized advice for your hair care routine.
