Here is how to make the perfect kabalagala
Kabalagala is a popular Ugandan snack made from ripe bananas. To make the perfect kabalagala, you will need the following ingredients:
- 4 ripe bananas (but this can change depending on how many you want to make)
- 1 cup cassava flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (optional)
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
- Peel and mash the bananas:
- Peel the ripe bananas and place them in a mixing bowl.
- Mash the bananas until you have a smooth consistency.
- Combine dry ingredients:
- In a separate bowl, combine the cassava flour, and baking powder.
- Mix wet and dry ingredients:
- Add the mashed bananas to the dry ingredients.
- Mix well until you have a thick dough. Knead the dough and flatten it so that you are able to cut the round kabalagala shape.
- Heat vegetable oil:
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot. Make sure there’s enough oil to submerge the kabalagala.
- Once the oil is hot, drop the cut kabalagala into the hot oil. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry until the kabalagala turns golden brown, flipping them to ensure even cooking. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Drain excess oil:
- Once the kabalagala is golden brown and crispy, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil.
- Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve:
- Allow the kabalagala to cool slightly before serving.
Remember, you can experiment with the recipe by adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor if you prefer.
