Here is how to make the perfect kabalagala

Kabalagala is a popular Ugandan snack made from ripe bananas. To make the perfect kabalagala, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 4 ripe bananas (but this can change depending on how many you want to make)
  • 1 cup cassava flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Peel and mash the bananas:
    1. Peel the ripe bananas and place them in a mixing bowl.
    1. Mash the bananas until you have a smooth consistency.
  2. Combine dry ingredients:
    1. In a separate bowl, combine the cassava flour, and baking powder.
  3. Mix wet and dry ingredients:
    1. Add the mashed bananas to the dry ingredients.
    1. Mix well until you have a thick dough. Knead the dough and flatten it so that you are able to cut the round kabalagala shape.
  4. Heat vegetable oil:
    1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot. Make sure there’s enough oil to submerge the kabalagala.
    1. Once the oil is hot, drop the cut kabalagala into the hot oil. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.
    1. Fry until the kabalagala turns golden brown, flipping them to ensure even cooking. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Drain excess oil:
    1. Once the kabalagala is golden brown and crispy, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil.
    1. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Serve:
    1. Allow the kabalagala to cool slightly before serving.

Remember, you can experiment with the recipe by adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor if you prefer.
