Transform your home into a haven

It is common to outgrow a space and yearn for a change of environment, especially if you have stayed in the same place for a long time. Most people live in homes for almost all their livelihoods, and when they feel exhausted they opt to move or buy a new home. Yet the same home could be brought back to life by simply renovating and moving a few things.

Sometimes the change you’re looking for is not as complicated as you think; changing the way things have been and painting walls could be the magic you needed to rejuvenate the excitement in your home.

Here are some useful ways you can turn your home into the once welcoming, joyful home it once was:-

Celebrate pattern and texture

Almost all Ugandan home owners are accustomed to white, brown tiles and cream walls. How about we customise tiles and texture for different spaces. Let’s say wooden floor tiles for the living room, corrugated concrete tiles ripples for outdoor and fluted tiles around the kitchen area with colour?  This process doesn’t have to be as costly as many think due to the assumption that one has to hire an interior designer. A little time spent online browsing some home interior websites or even Pinterest can be quite enlightening and inspirational.

Lavish bold colours

Who said kitchen cabinets must be brown or white? Colours like sea green, earthy terracotta and dark purple will bring vibrancy to your home.

Don’t fear to try bold colours because these bring more a more exciting atmosphere to your home and open your mind to embracing diversity and change. You will automatically feel like you moved if you utilise great colour pallets.

Get creative with dormant spaces

That space below the stairs can be turned into a reading area for the children; the corridor can become your new therapy space. A few art paintings in the corridor, some candles and you have quite space for reflection. The balcony shouldn’t be packed with dead toys; place some potted flowers there and invest in warm lighting and soon you will have many favourite places in your house. When we talk about utilising space, we don’t mean crowding or littering, keep it simple and clean.

Invest in quality kitchenware

Ceramic bowls will have you eating cereal just so you can enjoy the feel of the bowl. Porcelains are also a good collection to add to your cabinets. Choose bold colours like rich green, white, mixed patterns to make cooking and meal time even more fun and satisfying.

Extra-ordinary flower vases

Often you walk into a hotel room and the only decor is a huge coloured flower vase, just one is enough to transform the space. As long as you choose one that blends well with your space, vases can speak magic even in extremely big rooms.

Grow your own food and flowers

Plant your own flower garden along with some vegetables like tomatoes and green pepper. Probably the missing piece of the puzzle was a garden. Being able to grow your own food not only helps your expenditure but also adds life to the home. Children will have chores like watering the plants and these could be bonding activities for everyone.

Add a swing or a hammock

Make your own swing or buy a hammock and spend some afternoons or evenings reading and listening to birds as you enjoy the calmness.

Finally, start living life the way you dream it, shuffle things up and enjoy living without the clock on some days. Because this 24 hour clock rule has brought generations to misery. Break the rules if you want to experience change without having to pay for it.
