Najjemba and Ikwaput nominated for CAF awards 2022
After becoming champions of the last concluded 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship, Crested Cranes’ duo, Fazila Ikwaput and Fauzia Najjemba were, on Wednesday enlisted for the prestigious CAF Awards 2022.
This CAF shortlist revealed that while Najjemba was nominated in the CAF Young Player of the Year (Women), Ikwaput is listed in the CAF African Women Footballer of the year category. Ikwaput, in her nomination is the first Ugandan female footballer to get this nomination having made it to the top 30. The list also has Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala who is a four time winner as well as Linda Mothlaho, Rasheedat Ajibade and Thembi Kgatlana all from South Africa.
Save scoring one of the winning goals during the CECAFA finals where Ikwaput scored a total of six goals, last year, she guided Lady Doves FC to their first league title. In the former, Ikwaput was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while in the latter, she was named top scorer as well as MVP. She also helped Lady Doves FC finish in the third position during the inaugural CECAFA Regional Qualifies with four goals.
Last season, she shared the top scorer fame in the FUFA Women Super League with UCU Lady Cardinals’ Hasifah Nassuna as both had 16 goals.
On the other hand, with 12 goals in six games, Najjemba gained fame in the 2022 CECAFA U20 Women’s Championship thus named top scorer. At the beginning of 2022, she moved to BIIK Shymkent in Kazakhstan where she has already netted an impressive nine goals and six assists.
