Is your car ready for festive season travels?
Preparing your car for festive travels in Uganda, or any other location, is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Mathew Mukisa, a mechanic and garage owner gives tips to help you get your car ready for the festive season:
Check the fluids
Check your engine oil to ensure the oil is at the recommended level and consider an oil change if needed. Your transmission fluid should also be checked and topped up if necessary. Without properly functioning brakes, your car is a death trap. Therefore, confirm that your brake fluid is at the recommended level. Lastly, ensure the radiator has the right amount of coolant to prevent overheating.
Inspect the tyres
Here, you must check tyre pressure and make sure it matches the manufacturer’s recommendations, inspect the tread depth for adequate traction, look for signs of wear or damage and replace tyres if necessary. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre and ensure you have the necessary tools for changing a flat tyre.
Battery check
Test the battery to make sure it’s in good condition. One thing that most motorists forget to do but is important is to clean the battery terminals and ensure a secure connection.
Brake inspection
Check the brake pads and rotors for wear and ensure the brake fluid is at the correct level. If you notice any issues, have your brakes inspected by a professional mechanic.
Lights and indicators
Confirm that all exterior lights are working, including headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights. Replace any burned-out bulbs.
Wipers and fluid
Check the windshield wipers for wear and replace them if needed. Top up the windshield washer fluid.
Belts and hoses
Inspect the serpentine belt and other engine belts for wear and proper tension. Check hoses for leaks or signs of wear.
Check the spare parts
Check and replace the engine air filter if necessary. Ensure you have essential spare parts such as a jack, lug wrench, and other tools for minor repairs.
Emergency kit
Pack an emergency kit with essentials like a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, basic tools, and a tyre repair kit.
Fuel and range
Fill up the tank before your journey and plan for fuel stops along the route. Be aware of the distance between fuel stations, especially if traveling to remote areas. Ensure you have all necessary documents, including your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance.
Remember to plan your route, inform someone about your travel plans, and drive responsibly. Safe travels.
